About

In the beginning this website was just another class project, but it evolved into something more as I truly began to understand the importance of Emancipation Day, an official holiday in the District of Columbia. I wanted to create a website that would help an outsider understand the importance of this holiday at the local and national level. Emancipation in Washington, DC paved the way for national emancipation lifting up the expectations of those in slavery.

I pulled resources from a variety of areas, I would like to highlight a few – The Library of Congress, Civil War Washington, First Freed by Elizabeth Lewis-Clark.
